Standing out with a commitment to old-fashioned bleep
2010 | Label: DFA / Revolver

Plenty of DFA hallmarks are present and accounted for on the first album by Marcus Lambkin, the Irish dance producer who does business under the charming moniker Shit Robot. Like many of the label's acts, he's fond of slow-building arrangements that take off from simple, kinetic keyboard riffs and gradually shifting sonic focus. The great Nancy Whang, who sings all over LCD Soundsystem and the Juan MacLean's albums, makes a welcome appearance on "Take 'Em Up." (LCD's James Murphy and Juan MacLean himself make appearances also.) But Shit Robot stands out by being so committed to old-fashioned bleep. You know the kind — super-affordable keyboards, early '80s electro, plink with weird decay rates. He likes to put those tones right up front, to bask in them, and that kind of fearless intimacy with something that might be uncool is another DFA hallmark. From the Cradle to the Rave is about equal parts more-or-less trad songwriting (Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip guests on "Losing My Patience" and Ian Svenonious appears on "Simple Things") and jamming (or arranging) out a groove: "I Found Love" moves through a few iterations of a basic house groove without losing the feel. At its best, it's… read more »

Good stuff

RenaissanceMan

I discovered this via the Most People Are DJs podcast and was quite pleased with the whole record. It's good electronica.

Take Em Up = good

Best track on the album is "Take Em Up," which features Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem. It's the only track I've downloaded, and a durn catchy one at that. It will definitely be on frequent rotation. The only other one that sounds intriguing is "Losing My Patience," which features Alexis Taylor, frontman for Hot Chip.

this single came out a while ago, and to me its the only one on here worth much of anything, but its a very solid track. simple yes, but very nice. don't need to get the whole album, but 'i got a feeling' is worth the credit.

Shit Robot... Exactly

At least they live up to their name. There are a lot of good retro electronic artists out there, this just sounds like a shitty parody of it all.

Pretty good, Shit!

This is a good album. I am also a fan of Kavinsky and I feel that Shit Robot is a decent album for all you electronic fans. Download it and enjoy!

They Say All Music Guide

With fond remembrance for the days when acid house reigned supreme, 20-year veteran, pal of the DFA crew, and former resident DJ at the Save the Robots club Marcus Lambkin finally released his first album in 2010. Relying on scenesters like Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, the Make-Up’s Ian Svenonius, and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and Nancy Whang (also of Juan Maclean) to keep the songs relevant, From the Cradle to the Rave is overtly retro, dating directly from the mid-‘80s to early ‘90s. Elements of Technotronic, Bizarre Inc., Bananarama, and Yaz pop up amidst the hearty 4/4 kick, synth strings, digital Steinway, handclaps, and gurgling bass grooves, as well as the all-encompassing classic techno of Detroit, Chicago, and Germany. Appropriation is the name of the game, so there are few musical surprises in the 39-year-old’s veteran beats. The main shocker is that Lambkin never tries to sound the least bit pertinent, but instead holds on stubbornly to yesteryear on this dated but fun throwback to 12″ singles. – Jason Lymangrover
