Power-pop kings

strat69

Not "the" Shoes (OK emusic?!!) While a great deal of this is definitely "period" stuff with all the cheese-synth signatures and guitar-processor-into-the-recording-board (early digital) textures, the construction/production of the songs is actually quite amazing. The interesting thing is that these guys stayed quite independent throughout and I hope they still have their studio up in Zion (Short Order Recorder?). To me,their sound was always like The Cars on steroids. Download some of this as there are some of the most pristine harmonies and productions from the period (especially the "Propeller" stuff, 7, 9, 13,14). Sweet.

Uplifting is right,

Capnmidnight

Paul B. sez it best. Maybe a coupla sub-par songs but not a really bad song in the bunch. This album always puts a smile on my face. Uncomplicated, heart-felt rock'n'roll.

Try on Shoes

DrHumpp

The band name comes from an early John Lennon quote and so as assumed, most of their music reaches towards the power pop of the Beatles. Though some of their stuff was average, when they were on they were as good as Big Star, Dwight Twilley, Flamin' Groovies or Todd Rundgren. I can recommend this release but check out the Present Tense/Tongue Twister split cd for the real fun. Beyond the excellent power pop there was also some rock and a couple great ballads. Well worth the search.

Power Pop Don't Stop

Paul.B

I don't know much about Shoes other than they were late 70's /early 80's power pop quartet. A good friend brought them to my attention via a compliation tape 15 years ago, and it's great to re-discover them through emusic. Uplifting, hook-laden, hopelessly romantic power pop at it's finest. This compliation is a great introduction. Start off with the exquisite 'Summer Rain' (obvious Byrds influence here), then move onto to some of the rockier stuff. The major chords and harmonies running through 'Tomorrow Night', 'Curiosity' and 'Too Late' should make you very happy indeed.

They Say All Music Guide

A 22-song compilation, this is a wonderfully comprehensive overview of this wonderful band. Good liner notes by former Trouser Press head honcho Ira Robbins. – John Dougan
