Shriekback, Cormorant
2007 | Label: Malicious Damage / IODA

The eighth record from Shriekback — a group that features Gang of Four's Dave Allen and Barry Andrews of XTC — finds the group peppering their grim art-rock with hints of global groove. “Ronny” and “Sea Theory” simmer with tribal percussion, “The Strongest Wind That Blows” rides on a reggae rhythm and “Voiled Karletus” opens with squelching gypsy strings. But though they've expanded their sphere of influences, the group is still feeling gloomy as ever: each song is an exercise in minor-key songwriting, and Andrews'vocals sound as haunting and spiteful as ever. Though they may have refined their songwriting over their 15 year existence, their worldview, thankfully, is as dour as ever.

I loved the band back in the late 80s, but had low expectations for this new album. I'm happily surprised though -- something which both recaptures their old sound, but still sounds fresh to my older tastes. Most of the album maintains a delightful grindy sinister sound. I'm not sure why track 2 was chosen as a daily download, as I felt it was one of least engaging tracks. I suggest sampling any of tracks 3,5,6,8,10 and DL if it appeals. Skip 2,4,11. The remainder are all solid, if you enjoy what you DL'd. (And I think the reviewer meant 25yrs, not 15yrs.)

Best Shriekback in Years

I am glad to see that emusic is getting the latest Shriekback on their site! This album is fantastic! I say that as a long time fan. Check out the newest album "Glory Bumps" as well. It is great too! I hope "Jam Science" will be available here soon. I can't find it anywhere!
