love the tone and artistry of this guy!
Read the John Morthland review, especially the "Elemental Journey is almost like a rootsy, guitar-based version of Brian Eno’s ambient sound." I wanted to take that literally but I understand it was intended metaphorically. None the less, it is spacious, layered so if that is where the original reviewer meant with the ambient comparison, he's got that right. Beautiful album, precise but not clinical or cold. Sonny and friends have created a new slide guitar instrumental album that will be familiar but Sonny adapts to his guests and the sum is greater than the parts.
I don't think people buy his records for his singing, but I sure find myself looking for something to break up that one longgggggg slide run that seems to permeate this record. It isn't bad, and I will probably keep a third of the record in rotation on the iPod, but there is little here to remind you that he does indeed hail from South Louisiana. A bit too dreamy, 'journey-like' (no, no no, not like those guys!) and some variation throughout the record would have made it a nicer listening experience.
Sonny is on his game for this one , I like the instramental only them of this one.No single track is more evedent to that then Passionola with Eric Johnson. If you havn't been aware of Sonny before this release than you havn't been LISTENING to the right kind of soulfull southern blues. The title track alone should make you a fan, what a great Elemental Journey to be on.
