It's not often that you can get a record with so many great songs with musicianship so exceptional that the songs are in danger of being obscured. Steve Gadd's drumming on this album is sublime (check out the title track) and Larry Carlton earned a place in the session player's hall of fame for his amazing guitar. Some called this record "pretentious" when it came out. Only because they were intimidated by it.
I just want to add to the glowing reviews below that yes this is a great album but do not for a minute think that their other work is not also genius. From Reelin in the Years to their recent work is all good. I have everything they did, seen them live and still am not let down when they come on. So, it's all good.
I have listened to this album hundreds if not thousands of times. It gets better as the years go by. Had my first copy when I was 14. Heard Steely do it the album live. I just go crazy when I hear the song Aja. It is a must have.
This is the band's pinnacle. Their years of honing their sound and mastering their craft all culminate in these seven songs. Their subsequent albums don't measure up and their previous work is all a build up. The title track is the perfect blend of jazz, rock and pop sensibility. Josie/Peg/Black Cow and Deacon Blues are unarguably nearly perfect songs with oblique yet compelling narratives. Friggin' awesome.
somehow i can't picture my badass 10-year old self listening to this ad inifinitum, but i did. a genius even then. as emusic lands these albums i haven't heard in 25 years there is the cringe factor.... you know the one... breaking into an embarrassment sweat from rechecking, say, that air supply album you really really really dug..... no problem here.... it's jazzy, funky, soulful.... without being so self-consciously so.... as smooth and comfortable as music can be
This album, written back in the mid 70's, is one of the finest jazz/rock compilations ever - it plays as well today as it day on its release - demands to be played over and over again - it is ageless and classic.
