Revolutions-Steve Winwood

EMUSIC-02851B6B

No music library is complete without something from Steve Winwood. The Spencer Davis Group (mis-named in my opinion) had so much influence on many of the great artists of today. You just couldn't ignore the energy flowing from this band. I remember having discussions with my high school teachers back in the 80's about "Little Stevie Winwood" and how much he had infected them in their younger days with his energy and unique keyboard and vocal styles. Just an all-around good listen for any occasion. Definitely one of my classic rock favorites!

Never realized how much great music he was a part

This CDis solid from beginning to end. The early Spencer Davis, Traffic and Blind Faith material may be a little before some of our times, but is excellent, and a great build up to the short period of solo music that had Stevie on top of the world. I forgot how much I liked his music. For $6.99 this might be the best value on this whole site.

They Say All Music Guide

The single-disc distillation of Universal’s 2010 four-disc box set Revolutions: The Very Best of Steve Winwood offers as well-balanced a look at Winwood’s career as could possibly be done in a 17-track collection. Opening with a pair of the Spencer Davis Group’s biggest hits (“Gimme Some Lovin’,” “I’m a Man”), this then gives way to five selections from Traffic, including “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and “Glad,” and a stop at Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” before winding through all of his ‘80s solo hits (substituting a new 2010 version of “Spanish Dancer” for the original), concluding with a duet with Eric Clapton on “Dirty City.” There may be a few other tracks that could have made the cut, but what is here provides an effective introductory sampler to Winwood’s wide-ranging career. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
