Yup!

Had the eight track, had the album, got the CD. The guitar solo on the title track was definitely one of the hardest rock solos to date (Jimi was blues) and the keyboard work throughout the entire album is superb! Definitely the best art-ROCK of the American 70's. I know, I know.... but Kansas was more ART-rock and definitely the best at what THEY did as well.

The Pinnacle

Bluesboy

If you want an art-rock album with the emphasis firmly on the ROCK, this is it. Pieces of Eight is a better album, but this one works a fairly tight concept and spawned songs that Cartman would be proudly belting out 30 years later.

By Maris Kreizman, Audiobooks Editor

Here are the songs that were playing during seminal TV scenes--from Seth and Summer slow dancing to Ryan Adams' romantic cover of "Wonderwall" on The OC, to Rudy Huxtable's Ray Charles lip sync performance on The Cosby Show, to Neko Case and Nick Cave's haunting cover of "She's Not There" from the fourth season opener of True Blood. These memorable musical moments are brought to you by Slaughterhouse 90210, a blog that combines screenshots from… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Other than being their first platinum-selling album, The Grand Illusion led Styx steadfastly into the domain of AOR rock. Built on the strengths of “Come Sail Away”‘s ballad-to-rock metamorphosis, which gained them their second Top Ten hit, and on the high harmonies of newcomer Tommy Shaw throughout “Fooling Yourself,” The Grand Illusion introduced Styx to the gates of commercial stardom. The pulverized growl of “Miss America” reveals the group’s guitar-savvy approach to six-string rock, while De Young pretentiously struts his singing prowess throughout the title track. Shaw’s induction into the band has clearly settled, and his guitar work, along with James Young’s, is full and extremely sharp where it matters most. Even the songwriting is more effluent than Crystal Ball, which was released one year earlier, shedding their mystical song motifs for a more audience-pleasing lyric and chord counterpoise. Reaching number six on the album charts, The Grand Illusion was the first to display the gelled accomplishments of both Tommy Shaw and Dennis De Young as a tandem. – Mike DeGagne
