The Brooklyn-by-way-of-Connecticut quartet known as Suckers do a lot of whistling. But not the Andrew Bird, sitting-in-a-tiny-room-all-alone style. This is massive, soaring stuff. On the gallant "Roman Candles," from their debut full-length Wild Smile, whistling is enough to build an entire chorus. It's a typically unlikely move for a band that rose up out of the teenage soul-crushing suburbs of New Haven, Connecticut, and stumbled into a scene populated by Brooklyn's indie superstars, carousing, if not quite collaborating, with them on a regular basis. There's a predictably "Brooklyn" thing going on on Wild Smile. The swaying hooks, three-part harmonies and gorgeous flamenco horns are classic strokes. But this is strictly a Suckers record. The occasional elaborately feathered costumes and face paint that come with the live show are part of that. But one listen to the epic "It Gets Your Body Movin'," produced by Yeasayer's Anand Tucker, and it's clear they're onto something special.
