The Congos / Sun Araw / M. Geddes Gengras, Icon Give Thank
2012 | Label: RVNG INTL. / SC Distribution

Interesting, not gripping

Verdunguy

Far from dub, far from reggae, rhythmic, mystical and self-indulgent - it is a claustrophobic release. It has a trapped in the closet while a religious fanatic goes berserk outside feel to it - not that appealing. I thought I'd like it because the Congos' work had a very specific feel to it, but this is not a strong release.

If you remember and liked the some of the obscure artists from the early days of reggae (think the likes of Ras Michael and the Suns of Negus) that were truly focused on the mystical side of Rastafarianism then there is a good chance you'll appreciate tracks like Invocation and Thanks and Praise. If you survived that era in a ganga induced haze, you might think you remember the other tracks. Definitely different and not for everyone.

Mehhhh

pss

I imagine this recirding could be divisive - you either like it or not. Try one track and you'll know which side you'll fall. I wish I had before downloading them all.
