The creeping, crawling face-off between two metal legends.
Label: Southern Lord

The inevitable studio collaboration between the American wizards of low-end drone and the Japanese masters of heavy noise is more than a little like King Kong vs. Godzilla — an epic face-off between two well-loved titans, fated to never quite measure up to the massive expectations generated by their impressive reputations. Still, it's a pretty mighty piece of work, which beefs up Sunn O)))'s space explorations with lumbering drums and skin-flaying guitar, while bringing out the more meditative side of Boris. Altar's only real wild card is “The Sinking Belle (Blue Sheep),” a creepy lullaby with reverb-drenched piano and half-whispered female vocals, which wouldn't sound out of place on a David Lynch soundtrack.

I like BORIS and I like Sunn O)))...

... but I did not like this album at all. I'm sorry, but if you are going to have a vocoder, a Moog Rouge, a Korg MS-20, two oberheims, another Korg MS-20, a sherman filter bank, an echoplex, and a Roland SH-101 all in ONE song you had better be Pink Floyd.

Blackened Depths

Why is this album by Sunn O))) & Boris instead of Boris & Sunn O)))? Well, this is definitely closer to Sunn O))) in tone. If you look at the booklet's photo shoot, everyone's in Sunn O))) robes. Boris have done their share of thick, heavy drone but don't quite reach the blackened depth of Sunn O))). Blackened depths are what you find here. Joe Preston (Melvins, Earth, High on Fire, Thrones) makes an awesome appearance on Akuma No Kuma on the VOG. I just love what he does with it. The droners (Etna, Akama No Kuma, Fried Eagle Mind and Blood Swamp) are all top notch. However, the surprise stand out track is indeed "The Sinking Belle" w/ Jesse Sykes (the girl from The Sweet Hereafter) on vox. She has got one haunting voice. Absolutely astonishing performance. I've read a few middling reviews of this record. Don't believe them. This is a stellar album. This album NEEDS to be in your collection. The 2 disc version has a 30m droner with Dylan Carlson. Too bad it's not here. Great song!

A Guide to Southern Lord

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

Southern Lord isn't your typical metal label. Started ten years ago by Sunn O))) /Thorr's Hammer members Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley (aka SOMA), the Southern Lord imprint pretty much bypasses the shred-happier aspects of the genre in favor of serving up some of the slowest, trippiest and heaviest metal in captivity. But while the label is generally associated with the Black Sabbath-derived doom sub-genre, much of their output is less about banging your head… more »
