Straight, no chaser, Guitar ROCK

JustPlainLucky

Ok, this probably goes a bit over the "power-pop" line. Big muscular guitars that fans of Amazing Disgrace-era Posies, the Shazam and Drivin n Cryin will love! Stand out tracks for me are...."I Can't Wait", "The Staggering Genius" (telling everyone you're happy, slipping into oblivion) "So Insincere" "Feeling Like I Do" (I just want to sleep it off with you..great lyric. Definitely a drunkard's lament), Remain Yer Strange, and Drag You Closer to Me. Henry Rollins said that when he listened to Fun House by Iggy and the Stooges, he wanted to tear shit up. I think this album falls into that category for me, and that's NOT a bad thing.

So Insincere should be on every mixtape ever

tania

So Insincere is one of the sickest, most catchy power-pop-rock songs ever. It should have been a massive hit. The rest of this album is decent, but really seems bland in comparison. I also very much like "Feeling Like I Do" and "The Staggering Genius" too though. "Baby Goes To 11" is either really catchy or really annoying, even with Uncle Bob's backing vocals, I'm uncertain.

Beatle pop on steroids

jwhitcomb3

This album takes Beatles/Big Star pop and juices it up with grinding guitars. But they also step back for some laid back tracks, which gives the album plenty of texture (and gives you a breather from the onslaught). Great songwriting, nice singing and production. Check it out!

They Say All Music Guide

On their fourth album, Last Call for Vitriol, Superdrag doesn’t have any bad blood. Well, not really. Arena Rock Recordings feels like family, and the nasty departure from Elektra is old news. What remains the same is the band’s jaunty, two-sided rock sound: candied licks meshed together with spiky cut riffs for a spitfire of real pop/rock. Frontman/guitarist John Davis’ vocal kick is killer on the punk fury of “So Insincere” and “The Staggering Genius.” However, he makes room for bassist Sam Powers to take to the mic on the gnarly “Remain Yer Strange.” Powers also wrote/co-wrote five tracks on Last Call for Vitriol, and the magic between he and Davis is obvious. From “Safe and Warm” to the space rock threads of “Feeling Like I Do,” Superdrag’s Southern roots and good boy sensitivity is at its finest. They’re far more darling than Fountains of Wayne and a bit too rowdy to be like Weezer. Last Call for Vitriol is formulaic in the sense of the band’s sticking with what makes them rock out in the first place. Superdrag has never compromised their sound, and Last Call for Vitriol redefines that with a sucker punch. – MacKenzie Wilson
