Most music from Finland that has become familiar comes from those moody, atmospheric discs put out by North Side. Sv¤ng, a harmonica quartet, embraces a larger, more swinging canon (the name is meant to imply something like "swing"), incorporating elements of European and American music. The members have the same pedigree of many Finnish folkies: they are students and instructors of the Sibelius Academy. They use a combination of harps: diatonics, chromatics and tremolos on top; chordal and bass on the bottom. Their sound is rhythmic, their playing tight, never sounding like a novelty. It's a thick sound that has a sweet reed-like melody flowing throughout. Indeed, it reminds me of Klezmer records, perhaps David Tarras. If you have any interest, go check them out on Youtube. Their infectious. NOTE: this disc should be categorized as either folk or international/Eastern Europe.
