Tad, 8-Way Santa
Label: Sub Pop Records

Led by the oversized, outsized singer Tad Doyle, Tad remain grunge’s unsung heroes: They were one of the first to sign with Sub Pop records and they tapped Butch Vig to produce their 1991 album 8-Way Santa, long before the Nevermind producer became rock’s go-to guy for album production. They always seemed more jokey than angst-ridden bands — “Wired God” is a slack-jawed stoner-metal jam about driving drunk — but for sheer needle-in-the-red guitar riffage, it doesn’t get much heavier than this album.

Tad Rules Nirvana OK

Saw Tad open for Nirvana in Vancouver in 1989(?) and they made Kurt Etc seem wimpy. Listen to this and know why.

great, heavy sound, I love this record, it never gets old even though it was largely overlooked.

Help Me, Jack Pepsi!

This album needs to be on the "22 Essential SubPop Albums"!!! Near the top. Maybe some critics didn't take it seriously because it did have humor. But this is no novelty record. I STILL like this album so much more than Nevermind.

They Say All Music Guide

A quirky but hard-rockin’ band drawing on thrash metal, hard rock and punk influences, the obscure Tad made a memorable, if underrated, contribution to grunge and alternative rock with 8-Way Santa. In contrast to the consistently dark and pessimistic tendencies of many other grunge units, Tad (named after lead singer Tad Doyle) comes across as more fun and lighthearted than anything. Titles like “3-D Witch Hunt,” “Jack Pepsi” (a goofy parody of truck driver songs) and “Hedge Hog” point to the fact that Tad isn’t without a healthy sense of humor. At times, this abrasive, freewheeling foursome almost sounds like grunge’s answer to Aerosmith. But unfortunately, Tad never escaped obscurity. – Alex Henderson
