Masterpieces

Glazunov's Symphonies are amazing. They range from the Russian nationalistic style of Borodin and Balakirev to the cantabile melodies heard in works by Tchaikovsky. These works definitely deserve more attention but I believe they have gained more popularity in the last few rescent years.

Forgotten gems

Glazunov's symphonies used to be hugely popular, but have inexplicably fallen out of favour. They are everything Russian romantic symphonies should be - tuneful, masterfully orchestrated with just the right amount of academic rigour. OK, they're not all masterpieces and some finales in particular can go on too long, but for melodic invention and fine construction they beat the Borodin symphonies every time. The performances are wonderful - powerful, passionate, but not overblown.
