Along with acts like Thursday and Brand New, Taking Back Sunday helped make their East Coast brand of emo a national phenomenon. On their debut, they’re at their most visceral and transparent. Frontman Adam Lazzara was known for swinging the microphone around like a cowboy’s lasso, and his band crafted a collection of songs that were more commercially marketable than many of their peers without sacrificing either their kinetic energy or inherent vulnerability.
