An OK album

I think the hype over "Talking heads" is way beyond what they deserve. I like some of the songs, but most of the album is over sophisticated and not that much fun, but that is my opinion...

....of the new wave, new music, post-punk, first influences of world music into rock, Brian Eno - David Byrne brilliantizing of the T Heads. The later works ("Wild Wild Life") sound like the kitsch they were, but the earlier works stand up proud after all these years: Take Me To The River, Life During Wartime, Girlfriend Is Better, This Must Be The Place....

Great stuff

Wavicle

I don't get all the bitterness about album only downloads. The whole album on emusic costs less than you'd spend for the "couple of good tracks" at a competitor. This is a great compilation containing a good selection of the Heads' most popular tunes: Psycho Killer; Take me to the River; Once in a Lifetime; Burning Down the House; Road to Nowhere; And She Was; Wild Wild Life. Easily worth 24 credits, but costing only 12.

At Long Last....

I'm really glad this album's available. Although some tracks are "album only" I'd rather have that constraint than to have no Talking Heads on this site whatsoever; which was the case until recently. Go eMusic.

The Best of The Talking Heads

The album only stuff is stupid. I like to download songs so i dont have songs I dont care about. making me download songs I dont like is why I am not renewing my subscription. If I wanted the album I would go buy it. Competition here I come

Album Only Madness

Extol-Christ

The amount of "album only" tracks on this release is depressing. "Wild Wild Life" was just as big a hit as "Burning Down The House" or "Psycho Killer." Two are "album only" and the other one isn't. Why?

A Nice Collection

snappinshutters

I am new to Talking Heads. I got hooked when I saw a video of a live performance of "Life During Wartime". A good launching point for new fans of Talking Heads and I'm sure a nice collection of favorites of long-time fans.

Scene: Downtown New York Punk and Post-Punk, 1976-83

By Douglas Wolk, eMusic Contributor

There's always music going on in New York City, always young artists coming to town to seek their fortune. But from the mid '70s to the early '80s, a bunch of interlocking music scenes popped up around downtown Manhattan, where the rents were still low enough for young people to find a cheap loft to live in, make big noises and push their art as far as it could go. The center of the early New… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Rhino’s — or, more accurately, Sire/Warner/Rhino’s — Best of Talking Heads follows 2003′s box set Once in a Lifetime by a year, and it features the same remastering from that set. It also shares part of a title with the 1992 U.K. compilation The Best of Talking Heads: Once in a Lifetime, which was released the same year as the American double-disc overview Popular Favorites: Sand in the Vaseline. Given the similar titles, similar release dates, and similar track listings, it’s easy to get confused at first, but all you need to know is that if you’re looking for a comprehensive collection, get the Rhino box, and if you want a disc of hits, get this single-disc Rhino collection. Not that the 2004 Best of Talking Heads has every hit or well-known song — “I Zimbra,” “Born Under Punches,” “Crosseyed and Painless,” “Swamp,” and “Stay Up Late” could all have been here and all are missed — but at 18 tracks, this is a generous compilation and draws a better portrait of the band than not just the 1992 single-disc compilation, but arguably the patchwork Popular Favorites as well. For the casual fan, this is likely all they’ll need to have, and for others, it’s a good place to get acquainted with the band. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
