A little too jangly and friendly to be completely garage rock and too garage to be indie pop, Canada’s Tangiers is like a mod band reared on both. Along with a slight British accent coming from guitarist Josh Reichmann and bassist James Sayce (who are joined here by ex-Guided by Voices drummer Jon McCann and keyboardist Shelton Deverell), it won’t take long until the band receives comparisons to the Kaiser Chiefs. The band’s third record is consistent, but that also means that there’s no standout song that can bring these guys into the limelight. The slurry, muddy vocals don’t really help, and they more or less blend in with the band’s ’60s garage rock approach, most notable in “I Suggest a Crypt.” Punchy upbeat songs like “Crack Valley” and “Dragging the Harbor,” however, prevent The Family Myth from simply becoming another clone of the Buzzcocks, and the band has enough charm that it doesn’t need to swagger like many other garage rock revivalists. – Kenyon Hopkin
