A couple of the members might be over 70, but Taraf de Haïdouks perform with the energy of twentysomethings and the ability of musicians who've made a pact with the devil. They're a true village band, but endowed with virtuoso technique, fingers flying over violins and cimbaloms (hammered dulcimers) on tracks like "Turceasca," while the complex rhythms turn on a dime. It's an exhilarating run through heartbreaking sadness and towering joy, a white-knuckle ride you can't leave until the end — and then you immediately want to go again.
