Telephone Jim Jesus, Anywhere Out Of The Everything
2007 | Label: anticon / IODA

Much has been made of the Anticon's label forward-thinking hip-hop lyrics. They, themselves, called one of their first label compilations Music for the Advancement of Hip Hop. (Tongue sorta firmly in cheek, of course.) Telephone Jim Jesus, however, has taken a different tack towards advancing hip-hop with his solo work, proving that whether you like Anticon's lyrics or not, their beatmaking is second-to-none. A largely instrumental work, Anywhere Out of the Everything is a dense forest of sounds, full of trashcan drums, snatches of radio static and synths buried beneath looped guitar and vinyl crackle. While it may not advance the genre anywhere in particular, it's perhaps as close as it gets to a hip-hop ideal: crafting beautiful art from music that you didn't know even existed.
