Folky, catchy and awesome. You need this record.
2009 | Label: Kill Rock Stars / Redeye

Thao Nguyen's We Brave Bee Stings and All is an astonishing mash of herky-jerked D.C. punk and Olympia-style folk. Thao, an Asian woman whose voice sounds like that of a young man, favors an acoustic guitar, a vaguely rootsy take on literate indie-rock in the vein of Smart Went Crazy and other nerdy in a brawny kinda way bands of that ilk. "Beat (Health, Life, and Fire)" is the best song here — and an early fave for song of the year. Over upper-fret hummingbird-strums Nguyen sings, "Beat my chest/ Beat the ones who love me the best/ Oh, how could they be liars/ They assured me health, life and fire" with a slight Bjork lilt, her voice breaking bread with a country twang. The song is ridiculously catchy and propulsive, and it's about as close to a must-download as there can be. Elsewhere, We Brave does not let up. "Swimming Pools" is super-cute and catchy (imagine Kimya Dawson all grown'd up) and "Big Kid Table" is mega-cute and loveable. Don't overlook this one.

I keep listening, and listening

Xtn

Still great fun after two years, especially for Bag of Hammers, Big Kids Table, and Geography -- but the whole thing is hugely rewarding.

a rockin album, and a rockin live set- thao will put your backfield in motion. i'd give it 5 stars, but i think there's some fluff on here. either way, download the whole thing- 32 minutes isn't much, but you'll want every second of thao.

Great album!

mosegrov

This was a pleasent surprice on a rainy summerday. Her voice reminds me of cat power, although the songs are catchier and more fun loving.

modest thao?

Axiom

when i hear the songs on this album, i have a number of thoughts - first, it is catchy, and smart, and it reminds me of Modest Mouse - only with a female sensibility and a more country/americana swing in the instrumentations. I also hear a little Edie Brickell in her voice - but none of that hippie trivialism. Looking forward to more.

Another Good Discovery

SenatorB

She sounds a bit like a cross between Edie Brickell and Wayne Coyne. "Bag of Hammers" is the standout, and it was a widely released on music podcasts when it came out, but I would've missed this album if a friend hadn't discovered it using his monthly downloads. Get tracks 1-4 to start.

They Say All Music Guide

“As sharp as I sing, it still soothes you, doesn’t it? Like a lick of ice cream?” sings Thao Nguyen on her Kill Rock Stars debut, We Brave Bee Stings and All. Whether it’s intentional or not, the line describes her sound perfectly. Nguyen’s rich, breathy voice — and the way she croons, yelps, and drawls with it — recalls Cat Power, Fiona Apple, and SinĂ©ad O’Connor. However, these comparisons suggest that Thao is a searing, intense artist when nothing could be further from the truth: her country-tinged indie folk-pop is playfully observant, mischievous with just a hint of vulnerability. By playing against type and putting a voice that seems tailor-made for brooding into songs that are sunny and sweet, Nguyen carves out her own intriguing territory among indie folk songstresses. She shows just how much she’s refined and expanded her music since her enjoyable debut, Like the Linen — which was released only about a year and a half earlier than this album — on We Brave Bee Stings and All’s first two songs. “Beat (Health, Life and Fire)” builds brass, ukulele, and piano to an urgent but joyous peak, while “Bag of Hammers” is as rambling as it is catchy. The interplay between Nguyen and her band, the Get Down Stay Down, is more intuitive than ever, and the album’s fuller sound (courtesy of producer Tucker Martine) complements her more fully formed songs. Nguyen’s ear for details pops up throughout We Brave Bee Stings and All, especially on “Swimming Pools,” which, like a firefly in a jar, nails what it’s like to be a kid running around outside in the summertime. On “Fear and Convenience,” she puts lyrics like “Did he hurt you in a new way?” to a cartwheeling melody. Moments like that and “Travel” — which tries to be a sad song on the first verse, but cheers up by the chorus — are few and far between on We Brave Bee Stings and All. In fact, most of the album is so cheery that it’s a good thing Nguyen’s voice isn’t delicate, or her music might be sickly sweet instead of fresh and engaging. Fortunately, “Feet Asleep”‘s Dixieland moxie and “Geography”‘s jazzy flourishes help keep the album from sounding too predictable. Even if this isn’t Thao’s first album, We Brave Bee Stings and All is a fine introduction to her music. – Heather Phares
