Not the American Boychoir's Best
I was quite disappointed with this offering from the American Boychoir. American vocal music is often quite difficult to manage. This one is off the mark. The Boychoir itself is uneven throughout. On some tracks they are good but they never achieve the outstanding level most of us expect from this outstanding organization. In some of the works, the tone is dark, with a sound that seems to come from the back of the throat rather than the open sounds of more usual works. Further, one can hear a few individual voices in the choir choking off their high notes and squeezing out their "e's" from constricted throats. In one song the effect is so bad that I can't help but wonder if the song was a novelty where a good boy soprano was imitating a bad one on purpose. In such cases, however, the listener has to be prepared for it. If you want to hear the American Boychoir and what it can really do, I would recommend almost any other of their albums such as Dixit Dominus.
