I didn't care for them much but their cover of Hazy Shade of Winter was great then and stands up today without sounding dated. Great song.

Immediately downloaded "Hazy Shade of Winter"

Total, blinding flashback to being on the playground in third grade, listening to this song on my Walkman. Good times, good times.

Don't Mind the Haters...Still Worth It.

Typically, I would agree with most of the comments here. However, I have to question so-called fans who say the rest of the album is "dumb" or "pointless". C'mon "Hazy Shade of Winter" is by far better reflective of the band itself than "Walk Like An Egyptian". I'm a child of the 80s born in the 70s. Songs like "I'll Set You Free" gave instant flashbacks! And one of my favorite tracks of all - where The Bangles are concerned - has to be "Manic Monday". The melody is fun and light, and the message is very easy to relate; waking up for work on a Monday generally sucks. The Gist: You may not get "Walk Like An Egyptian", "I'm In Line", or "Getting Out of Hand" without purchasing the whole album. What you CAN get as a single: Manic Monday Eternal Flame Be With You Hazy Shade of Winter I'll Set You Free In my opinion, there's a lot more to love in this essential than some would lead new fans about this album.

Nice 80's Ghost

Dipsy

I lisen to the one and feel the 1908's; I used to have trouble telling them apart from the Go Go's but in retrospect they had some solid songs which really were about joy and love. Have to say ladies I am sorry I did not get into your music sooner.

Wonderful

Great songs you may never have heard: If She Knew What She Wants; Hero Takes a Fall. Strangely, I don't see Going Down to Liverpool on the track list, though it is mentioned in the AMG review. This is a great album.

There is nothing essential

about the Bangles. The one song you may want cannot be had without downloading a whole album full of crap.

Covers That Are Better (known) Than The Originals

By Rich Caccappolo, CTO

Sure, most fans probably believe that being considered a great artist usually means they can write a great song. However, many of our most beloved, most popular, and most successful acts over the last 40 years are best known for songs they covered. In some cases, we all know the truth, e.g., Van Halen didn't write and first record "(Oh) Pretty Woman"; a guy with much more conservative hair and glasses penned and originally performed… more »

They Say All Music Guide

For all intents and purposes, The Essential Bangles acts a replacement for 1990′s Greatest Hits, as it features remastered sound and 90 percent of the same material. Like Greatest Hits, the disc contains 14 songs; the difference selection-wise is that “Live” (an All Over the Place album track) and “What I Meant to Say” (the B-side to “Eternal Flame”) are included instead of “Where Were You When I Needed You” and “Everything I Wanted.” This slight difference is of no substantial consequence. The disc strikes a good balance between the group’s most popular moments and their brightest, with their range — from “Going Down to Liverpool” to “Hazy Shade of Winter” to “Walk Like an Egyptian” (the unfortunate novelty hit) — put on display. You are strongly encouraged to verbally throttle anyone who refers to “Manic Monday” as anything less than pure bliss. – Andy Kellman
