Instruments are great, vocals need improvement

cottser

These guys have a pretty neat thing going on, instrumentally. They're talented, energetic, and they show quite a range on this album. My only issue is with the singing. Some vocal tracks here are better than others, but overall the tracks with vocals fall flat simply because of the lackluster singing performances. Don't get me wrong, I've heard worse as far as vocals go, and sometimes bad is good, but not in this case. I think they should stick to instrumentals.

A Sea of Sound That Will Wash Over You

This is my first review on eMusic, and for good reason was it this album that I chose to comment on. From the first few chords I heard of "Pinkies" (one of eMusic free daily downloads), I knew this album was going to be something special I had to download. While the band is obviously technically proficient with their instruments, there is a unique distorted quality to how they play (or perhaps how the various performances are arranged together) which draws the listener into a dizzying dream world. While most of the tracks would play well on their own, I feel the album definately benefits from being played through as one continuous experience. For singles to try I would recommend "Pinkies", "Tigers In Our Hearts", and "Sleep Forever". Be aware that most of the other tracks are instrumentals. I suspect this will be in lasting rotation, and I would not be surprised to come back later and up my rating to a solid 5 stars. This was a truly immersive experience.
