1990 debut offered a much-needed sound

DevilsMischief

It was the spring of 1990 when the band's first single "Jealous Again" caught my ear, and I've been hooked ever since. (The reviewer who said that this album came out in '88 is delusional!) I immediately bought the album and mailed the fan club. At a time when MtV and radio were dominated by hip-hop and power ballads, this album was refreshingly different. Just no-frills, rootsy, soulful rock from beginning to end. Critics at the time drew comparisons to bands like the Faces, Rolling Stones, Humble Pie, etc., but that's hardly a bad thing. Although the band continued to grow musically throughout the decade, I still find myself returning to this debut album. I'll never get sick of it. Emusic offers the remaster which includes the two bonus B-sides "Don't Wake Me" and the acoustic "She Talks To Angels", plus the album's original ghost track "Mercy Sweet Moan" (aka "The Live Too Fast Blues").

Almost classic

CreamJalapeno

A great album to kick off the 90's and still holds up for the most part.

Great Debut

Extol-Christ

I loved this album like an alcoholic loves whiskey when I was in high school. The band went on to record an even better album on their second effort, but this one still has the same swagger and energy of the best Small Faces and Rolling Stones recordings.

On a second listen

six6bricks

20 years ago, I was thinking posers but on a return listen to the Black Crowes, I have learned to appreciate Rich's guitar and Chris' singing. Much better. It would be nice if the two best songs were sold as singles but this is an album that works and is worth the song credits

What's going on with you guys?

Not only can't you download this album in the UK, you can't download it in Australia either! If you can filter us well enough to know where we are then you could also prevent non-available albums appearing on our download lists. I feel cheated and I'm annoyed that I cannot download Albums of my choice. I don't have any terrorist links and I'm not on any no-fly lists either. I 'm not satisfied with "The Best Of's" which is otherwise the only late model music available, if it's available at all.

Righteous Rockin'

BigonBluz

Infectious back beats, strident over-driven guitar chords and whiskey-edged vocals... what more do you want from a rock and roll album? Oh yeah, catchy originals and edgy covers of some great oldies like "Hard to Handle" make this a must own album for anyone who appreciates roots rock. Production is clean, lean and mean the way it should be, like on Van Halen and Montrose's first albums produced by Ted Templeman for WB. (Why are the first album always the rawest rockers?) This is a seminal rock and roll album by musicians who still loved to make music.

You can't help but shake it!

VetteFirst

Great throwback album that sounds like it came right from the 60's, but with better sound. Seminal songs like She Talks to Angels and Twice as Hard are what still draws us to rock-n-roll.

THIS is rock n' roll! Still holds up.

DevilsMischief

Most fans cite the Crowes' later efforts as creatively better, but the debut still has the big hits and musically stands strong on its own. It was a breath of fresh air in a time when hiphop and sub-par glam metal bands dominated the airwaves. I was hooked after hearing "Jealous Again" on Mtv in the spring of 1990 (which is when the album came out, NOT 1988 as somebody else said. And 1998 was just one of the re-release years). The original tracks are all here, plus bonus B-sides "Don't Wake Me" and the acoustic version of "Angels", plus the infamous ghost track "Mercy Sweet Moan", aka "The Live Too-Fast Blues".

They Say All Music Guide

The Black Crowes’ debut album, Shake Your Money Maker, might borrow heavily from the bluesy hard rock grooves of the Rolling Stones and Faces (plus a bit of classic soul), but the band gets away with it due to sharp songwriting and an ear for strong riffs and chorus melodies, not to mention the gritty, muscular rhythm guitar of Rich Robinson and brother Chris’ appropriate vocal swagger. Unlike their later records, the Crowes don’t really stretch out and jam that much on Money Maker, but that helps distill their virtues into a handful of memorable singles (“Jealous Again,” “She Talks to Angels,” a cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle”), and most of the album tracks maintain an equally high standard. Shake Your Money Maker might not be stunningly original, but it doesn’t need to be; it’s the most concise demonstration of the fact that the Black Crowes are a great, classic rock & roll band. [The 1998 reissue offers "Don't Wake Me," "Mercy, Sweet Moan," and an acoustic version of "She Talks to Angels" as bonus tracks.] – Steve Huey
