A blues-rock reunion yields new delights
2010 | Label: Nonesuch

Like so many long-suffering couples, Dan Auberbach and Patrick Carney needed some time apart to really appreciate each other. After 2008's inert, Danger Mouse-produced Attack & Release, the two members of the Ohio blooz-rock outfit pursued solo ventures; howling guitarist Auberbach worked on his weary solo debut, Keep It Hid, and then Carney, a bit scorned by that release, put together Drummer, a quintet of players from their home state. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and all of that.

Brothers is a reunion, return to form, and a slight reappraisal of that form. Auberbach sings with just a bit more wonder in his voice, emulating soul men more than blues legends, as on their delicate cover of Jerry Butler's "Never Gonna Give You Up" and the searing 'The Only One." Carney modulates his walloping rhythms, too. "Howlin' For You" is built on an unlikely foundation — the heavy, four-on-the-floor beat from Gary Glitter's "Rock 'n' Roll (Part 2)" — but somehow the band is just as comfortable driving hard as they are peeling back and moaning. There are classicist Black Keys songs here, particularly the rangy "Next Girl" and the lone Danger Mouse contribution, "Tighten Up." But mostly Brothers is… read more »

Brothers, by the Black Keys

zensafari

Definitely have enjoyed this one. I have to say, however, all my friends got me psyched about these guys being a rock "duo", but the album is full of over-dubs. There are tunes with bass, and keys, lead guitar, and rhythm guitar. So, in this respect, I was not as impressed, because this takes away from the magic of the sound being simply a duo. Still, it's great to listen to, and kind of gets me my soul rock fix when I'm in the mood.

This album touches deep into the soul, it will speak on beyond its time and become a classic like many other rock classics. This music is timeless.

Can't get enough of these guys

I didn't think I could like an album more than Rubber Factory, but Brothers is changing my mind. Download this immediately, put your headphones and just marvel at how much sound these two guys can make together.

Wow!!!

All I can say about this album is “Freakin’ Awesome!” Okay, that’s not all I can say about it. How about this: This is an exceptional album that A) sounds better every time you listen to it, B) every song on the playlist is better than the last, C) is a smoky, haunting blues album that will last the test of time, D) has some of the best lead guitar work I’ve heard in a very long time, E) has great bass rifts (probably because they’re performed by the lead guitarist), F) should be on every iPod, MP3 player, and computer in the world, G) has no contemporary comparison, H) did I mention it’s freakin’ awesome!, and I) this is a duo (unbelievable!). My favorite cuts are “Ten Cent Pistol” and “I’m Not the One” but that may change later today when I listen to this for the third time. Locate it, download it, listen - find bliss!

Cannot Believe...

...this album didn't make it into the top five, let alone the top ten, on eMusic's top 50 albums of 2010! Never mind the hype and the Grammys, The Black Keys are amazing, and they have been from the beginning. This was by far one of the very best albums of the year! And if you don't own it by now, it's only because you live under a rock...or you hate music!

Tip of the Iceberg

Jazee

This is without a doubt the Black Keys' breakout album. As a fan of theirs since Rubber Factory, I was weary of the changes they made in Attack and Release. But, this album ties in those expansions to their sound with their earlier blues roots, finally solidifying their sound in something new but honest-to-god rock. No better band is making music right now, and this is their best album yet. Buy it, and listen to it over and over, and then buy their entire discography. You will not be let down.

eMusic's Best Albums of 2010

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

The 80 albums that populate eMusic's Best of 2010 run the stylistic gamut: There's skronking avant-jazz, surf songs for beachside loungers, grinding metal and delicate folk. What unites these records, though, is the personal vision behind each of them. It doesn't matter if the instrumentation employs guitars, djembes, sax or just the human voice — the albums on this list represent a dedication to a personal aesthetic, and the songs are the sound of that… more »
