Groovy Mizell stuff

Donald Byrd backed himself up with the Mizell brothers to produce this first Blackbyrds album "The BlackByrds". It is a great sample of the Mizell sound that can also be heard on the 70's Donald Byrd albums. This album actually consists of their first two albums: "The BlackByrds" (first 8 tracks) and "Flying Start" (last 8 tracks).

In 1995, Ace Records took two of the Blackbyrds’ finest recordings and combined them on one disc. Their eponymous debut was released originally on Fantasy in 1973 to much acclaim, and is considered one of the finest works in their catalog. Flying Start followed shortly afterwards in 1974, also on Fantasy. – Rob Theakston
