Masters of the Epic Slow Jam

Trojan74

The Chi-lites were unique among the great groups of the 70s. Although their first hits, For God's Sake (Give More Power to the People) and We Are Neighbors were uptempo songs with powerful social messages, their signature became haunting epic slow songs about lost love and even death (Toby). Have You Seen Her and Oh Girl are two of the greatest songs ever. Oh Girl even had elements of blues incorporated into it. A Lonely Man and Coldest Days of My Life were great songs in their own right. Coldest Days of My Life is one of the most beautiful songs were put to record. I believe the Chi-lites became victims of the formula that made them such a successful act. Stoned Out of My Mind was one of the few uptempo songs of that era from them. This complilation shows all sides of the Chi-lites and is a must have.

Still the best!

StratDad

The Chi-Lites had a unique vibe, and many of these songs really stand up. Aside from the obvious choices, I like "A Letter to Myself".....is there a sadder song than this?

Gorgeous Chicago Soul

SoulStranger

The original hits in all their glory. This meaty anthology covers not only the well-known classics like "Oh Girl" and "Have You Seen Her" but also more obscure tracks like the sublime "Here I Am."

lkantrov

"Oh Girl" and "Have you seen her" - their biggest hits sound like the (great) originals to me.

Hearts On Fire: The Underbelly of Soul & Country

By Ilya Zinger, eMusic Contributor

For decades the genres of soul, R&B and country, with their straight-from-the-gut, heart-wrenching songwriting, existed in the shadow of rock's exuberant monolith. Legends like Curtis Mayfield, Gram Parsons and Loretta Lynn never graced a Rolling Stone cover. Yet, certified geniuses Charlie Parker and Biggie Smalls were known to request the twang of a country station from time to time while rock god David Bowie spent the better part of his early career miming the wail… more »
