Lush Ladies in Four Part Harmony!

As far as I can tell, this album is repackaging of a 1957 "best of" LP lacking the Chordettes' later hits "Lollipop" and "Never On Sunday" (eMusic carries both tracks on separate albums). I really enjoyed this plushly produced, sweet stuff — not nearly as cheesy or sleep-inducing as I thought. "Mr. Sandman" is the classic, of course.

Perhaps Wisconsin's biggest pop cultural contribution outside of Les Paul & the Violent Femmes. In fact unbeknownst to whipper snappers of today, the Chordettes were far bigger than the Violent Femmes ever were. Their vocal hits, in the barber shop quartet tradition, included "Sandman" heard on this collection, the theme to the hit 50's tv show "Zorro", as well as 1961's "Never On A Sunday" which topped the charts (and is available on eMusic as well). The Archie in the title is group arranger and former Cadence label honcho Archie Bleyer who married the group's singer Janet Ertel. Incidentally Bleyer has an album of his own on eMusic, also put out by the Andy William's affiliated Barnaby label.
