After September 11, 2001, this album's infamous original album cover — depicting Bay area-based rapper Boots and DJ Pam the Funkstress detonating explosions at the upper levels of the World Trade Center — was hastily replaced with an image of a flaming cocktail. Hip-hop had not been this controversial since the early '90s. Drawing on Ice Cube's wit and Chuck D's certitude, but (ironically) revealing a deep empathy with the world's sufferers, Boots refashioned protest music for a new century of instability. Yet the music was never subordinate to the messages he wanted to deliver. Party Music's Bay funk had everything it took to move the crowd, in the clubs or the streets.
