The Decemberists, The King is Dead
2011 | Label: CAPITOL

Armed with mandolins, acoustics and their ever-handy thesaurus, The Decemberists retreated to an 80-acre farm to record their sixth full-length, the decidedly rootsy The King is Dead. Once there, they did things the old-fashioned way: tracking live as a quintet, avoiding unnecessary overdubs, getting to the chorus before they could bore us. From the sound of it, there may have been a tractor or a coonhound involved. Frontman Colin Meloy sounds almost relaxed, his wordy soliloquies rubbing up cozily with his band’s muscle-fueled barnyard stomp. Embracing their inner Appalachians was a smart commercial move, too: Tracks like the R.E.M.-ish twang-rocker “Down by the Water” (its melody is almost identical to “The One I Love”) and the Simon & Garfunkel-esque folk ballad “January Hymn” are among the most hummable moments in the band’s strange, winding discography.

ugh.

Ahimsamonkey

Listening to Colin Meloy is like listening to a whiny toddler. His voice is like a aural icepick.

I wouldn't say I'm a fan of the band, but Crane Wife is one of my favorite albums. For me the other albums are like arrows that just miss the target of my taste. Based on facts I should like them but for some reason I just don't. But the band always puts out quality stuff. This one is no exception and I find that I like it a lot.

Disappointing

As a long-time Decemberists fan, I'm disappointed by the overall sound of this album. I hope The King Is Dead doesn't mean the old Decemberist sound is dead as well. :(

simple, tasteful, and enjoyable

I just cannot state without impartiality how much I enjoy The King is Dead. The Decemberists have joined instruments, not normally heard by most indie rockers.

Best straight pop record in a long time

EMUSIC-numbers

2011's runner up for album of the year after Bon Iver. Catchy, well-thought-out and perfectly executed top-to-bottom. Check Long Live the King for the b-sides for some more excellent stuff.

First of Decemberists

I'm just hearing them for the first time. Very thoughtful and well crafted. I love it.

Solid album

puertoland

It has a very 90s "alternative" feeling to it...very Toad the wet sprocket, REM like. This is why we fight is a great tune.

Another terrific album

The Decemberist never cease to delight me. Ever album has 3-4 great songs. Colin's distinctive voice, lyrics and melodies delivered by a fine bad made finer by the addition of Peter Buch makes this a particularly tasty recording. This is Why We Fight is my personal favorite on the album but 1,2,3.6 and 8 are excellent as well. might as well download the whole album. If you can see them in concert do so they are very entertaining and have a knack for getting a few thousand folks to join in a sing a long on their songs.

FAVORITE ALBUM IN YEARS!!

jsoneff

This album is the first album I have ever remembered hearing for the first time and LOVING every song on it. The Decemberists have been a band that i have long had experience with but never been amazed by before this. This album truly displays their range as musicians while not giving up their unique sound that makes them such a charm to listen to. As an experienced audiophile i HIGHLY recommend this album.

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

The Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival has changed a lot since its debut a decade ago as a jam-band-friendly neo-Woodstock. Endless guitar solos and skyscraping hacky sacks have given way to a genre-busting free-for-all with a little something for just about everyone. Metal? Check. Hip-Hop? Triple-check. Indie rock? #check. Sorting your way through at all can be overwhelming. That's where we come in. Here's our guide to the 40 bands worth braving the heat for. more »
