Oh what a fright...at least that's what I thought!

Having read the previous review as far as the dread word "re-recording", I thought I'd see for my self how they stood up to the original Chess masterpieces and to be fair I have to say that although they come nowhere close to the originals they at least convey the soul and the quality of this most wonderful of group's live performance. I saw them a few years ago in the UK (shown on the out of synch YouTube link on this page, I think) and it was the most moving performance I have ever seen in all my 40+ years of watching live acts, bloody hell, I nearly cried. Anyway, back to the compilation, buy 'em if you can't get the Chess releases. As a p.s. I would like to say that the very best of the Dells consists of rather more than five tracks. They deserve better.

These are re-recordings to be sure, but are saved by the fact this Hall of Fame vocal group can still deliver the goods more than 50 years after their founding. The music behind them, though, filters Charles Stepney's beloved arrangements through a tavern karoake machine. Seek out the Chess originals, they are worth it.
