The Best Mikado

Of the 8 recordings of The Mikado I've heard, this one is definitely my favorite. General agreement with the reviewer below. If only this issue had been released in Stereo! Still, we can be thankful for what remains. Thomas Round is an amazing Nanki-Poo. Peter Pratt's quick tempo for the List Song works marvelously. The skip in Act 2 happens near the end of Donald Adams' splendid rendition of "My object all sublime" -- of all places. Great singing from everyone, unlike the 1973 DOC recording. Bottom line: it's 2 credits: what have you got to lose? UPDATE: Album price has been hiked to $12 -- 12 times the old price! Not worth it anymore - try another recording or store.

A Classic Recording

The Cast: The Mikado--Donald Adams/ Nanki-Poo--Thomas Round/Ko-Ko--Peter Pratt/ Pooh-Bah--Kenneth Sandford/ Pish-Tush--Alan Styler/ Go-To--Owen Grundy/ Yum-Yum--Jean Hindmarsh / Pitti-Sing--Beryl Dixon/ Peep-Bo--Jennifer Toye/ Katisha-- Ann Drummond-Grant **This 1957 recording is a real bargain for 2 downloads (with the exception of a couple of LP pops and an annoying skip in act 2). Though Peter Pratt would not be my favorite Ko Ko. Thomas Round was simply the best G&S tenor ever. Plus this recording captures Kenneth Sanford in his prime and Donald Adams as the Mikado (listen to his maniacal screaming laugh in "My object all sublime:) The only shame is that this first G&S recording ever issued in stereo is here presented in mono.
