Dramatics are really dramatic

EMUSIC-GRANNY27

Just saw the Dramatics in concert last night and I was reminded why I've loved them for so long. L J said he had a cold and I say if that's how he sounds with a cold, never get rid of it. I hope that they decide to keep on doing what they do,until they can't do it any longer. I thought I was watching the 1970's dramatics. Love to the whole group and a special helping to L J.

Good, but not the best if could be!

I always felt the Dramatics were an underrated and unappreciated group. While this is a good collection, I hope that a compilation comes out which includes their years on ABC Records. Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get is one the greatest songs from the 70s and Get Up and Get Down is a great party rocker. Songs from the ABC years such as Me and Mrs. Jones, Be My Girl, and Just Shopping would make for a better compilation of their music.

Don’t Forget (The Rest of) The Motor City

By John Morthland, eMusic Contributor

Everybody knows Motown was great, but few realize what an incubator the entire City of Detroit was for soul music in its heyday. For each artist on Berry Gordy’s label there were several more just as good who went with another major, or with a smaller, local indie. Some made their names in r&b, vocal groups or gospel before evolving into soul; others started in soul but had their greatest impact in funk. But even… more »

Scene: Detroit Soul, 1960s and 1970s

By Hua Hsu, eMusic Contributor

Few cities embody the complexities of the American narrative quite like Detroit. A little over 100 years ago, the city's stunning architecture and stately plazas prompted comparisons to Paris. Detroit became synonymous with the nation's rise in the 20th Century, thanks to Henry Ford and the area's emerging auto industry. During World War II, as factories shifted from making cars to anything the war effort required, the city became known as the "Arsenal of Democracy."… more »

They Say All Music Guide

As part of Stax’s Very Best series the Dramatics are spotlighted on 18 tracks recorded between 1969 and 1974 for the Memphis based label. This set is aimed at the casual listener and includes the group’s first Top Five hit from 1971, “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get,” followed by the original Top Ten versions of “In the Rain,” “Hey You! Get off My Mountain” and “Shake It Well.” This 2007 compilation is slightly superior than the 1976 version Best of the Dramatics, also on Stax, due to overall improved sound quality and the addition of the tracks “Your Love Was Strange” from 1969 and their last R&B charted single “Bridge Over Troubled Water” from the late ’80s. – Al Campbell
