The Drums, Portamento
2011 | Label: Frenchkiss Records / The Orchard

“I believe that when we die, we die,” sings Jonathan Pierce on “Book of Revelations,” the opening cut of this Brooklyn indie band’s second album. Given that Pierce is an ex-born-again Christian, and that the Drums have often hid behind stylistic readymades (the video for early single “Down By the Water” was an exact recreation of a Shangri-Las’ performance on mid-’60s teen show Shindig! right down to the time code), such frankness comes as a revelation indeed.

This is not to say that these post-punk/surf-pop revivalists have shelved their Factory Records 7-inches and started freaking folk. Aside from the Wendy Carlos-esque synth ballad “Searching for Heaven,” every track still whizzes by at a caffeinated pace; trebly guitars click-clack on a trans-American express to the heart of the unabashedly antiquated anorak-clad Anglophile. But now the poetry is similarly straightforward. “I wanna buy you something but I don’t have any money,” yelps the chorus of “Money,” a single that coalesces everything great about the Drums’ buzzy 2010 debut and makes it better. “You’re hard to love,” Pierce exclaims, and then with the very next refrain concedes, “I Don’t Know How to Love.” To be sure, this is music borne of frustration.… read more »

here's the catch!

friedpudding

washed up on the city beach these boys play infectious pop that bears repeated listening . driven along by funky bass and chiming guitar riffs with sweet vocals saying dark things in catchy phrases . the drums sound fresh when in a happy trance . as others here say totally Factory inspired but there's that hint of Beach Boys magic lurking that makes it something new as well, especially on \"Days\" - \"Money\" and \"If He Likes It Let Him Do It\" . recommended stricture

Fun, smartly quirky and dark

Smalltownghosts

The Drums have shaken off the corn and girl group influences in order to make an adult pop album that sounds like the beach in the winter. It is dark and desolate, yet, it is still the beach and there are definitely rays of hope that shine through. for a more in depth review, visit www.yarnly.com

30- and 40-somethings called it college rock

If you liked "college rock" in the 80s (now called indie rock) and are seeking new bands to enjoy, try The Drums. Poppy, quirky, simple low-fi songs that remind you of (but don't sound exactly like) the Smiths, the Cure, or Joy Division in their ability to seem emotionally raw and vulnerable, while still inspiring toe tapping and some not-so-sharp 80s dance moves. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
