Spasmodic little songs that aren't just stupid, but perfectly stupid
Label: Sub Pop Records

Calling this an "album" is pushing it — its 12 songs are over in 13 minutes — but that's part of the joke: This is total speedfreak music, the rock equivalent of Crank: High Voltage, as fast and mock-threatening as the Tasmanian Devil. The band's obvious model is late-period Misfits, except with porn substituted for that band's horror-movie fixation ("Let's Fuck" is functionally very similar to the Misfits' "Green Hell"): Frontman Blag Jesus (a.k.a. Blag Dahlia) sings almost exclusively about the concerns of the reptile brain. In the Dwarves' single-minded mission to give offense, they become adorable. What keeps this from being a one-play album is that these spasmodic little songs are not just stupid, they're perfectly stupid — "Drug Store" is so nicely constructed that it's practically a commercial for stealing Romilar from pharmacies, and "Motherfucker" seems like what "Surfin' Bird" was always trying to articulate. In any case, there's absolutely no chance of getting bored with any of these songs. Just watch your wallet and your medicine cabinet.

Listen to this 3 times in row and you'll love it. This might be my favorite hardcore/punk album of all time. Drugstore was even in a Jim Carrey movie.

22 Essential Sub Pop Albums

By Douglas Wolk, eMusic Contributor

Sub Pop was a 'zine before it was a label, and its area of coverage was implied in its original name: "Subterranean Pop." Launched in the late '80s by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman, the label at first specialized in the loud, hairy, messy music that underground rock bands in the Pacific Northwest were making in those days. When that sound broke into the pop mainstream a few years later, Sub Pop broadened its mission. For… more »

They Say All Music Guide

With a title like Blood Guts & Pussy, an album cover which features three nude models drenched in animal blood, and song titles like “Let’s Fuck,” “Fuck You Up and Get High,” “Motherfucker,” and “Fuckhead,” the Dwarves had obviously redirected their style since Horror Stories. Gone is the subtle suggestiveness of that album, replaced by explicit exploitation and genuinely disgusting humor. Of course, most won’t find the Dwarves very humorous; it takes a sick mind to appreciate the Dwarves’ celebration of statutory rape on “Let’s Fuck” or vocalist Blag Jesus’ anger at a girl afraid of AIDS on “SFVD.” Thirteen songs full of general punk sloppiness and distortion performed in 14 minutes. [Note: Many pressings of the CD are missing the track "Fuckhead" and the bonus untitled "Bitch" track, although all versions of the CD have "Fuckhead" on the track list.] – Matt Carlson
