The eleven-member Four Mountain Singers are one of the most popular and authentic native chanting and drumming groups in America, and they perform at pow wows throughout the Southwest. This crystal clear recording was captured by Gerald Jay Markoe at the Navajo reservation in Leupp, Arizona. As is typical, the pow wow drum leads off each song, pulling the singers into song. This group of men and women sings with gusto and precision; the drum builds, pulses, or pauses for added emphasis and excitement. Moments of respite are provided by the peaceful flute of C. Brent Chase. Because the songs sound so similar to the uninitiated, liner notes would have been a welcome addition. – Carol Wright
