The Gits, Frenching the Bully
2003 | Label: Broken Rekids / Revolver

This Seattle-via-Ohio group were fronted by Mia Zapata, whose impressive pipes made her come off like the Janis Joplin of the grunge scene. Her band wasn’t bad either: Drummer Steve Moriarty delivered complex drums with the precision of a jazzbo, and guitarist Joe Spleen achieved a full, arena-ready tone despite being the sole guitarist. Unfortunately, The Gits were short lived: Zapata was murdered in Seattle in 1993, but their debut album Frenching the Bully is a raucous legacy to leave behind. (The reissued version includes a hot 1993 live show from Portland, Oregon, and proves what an undeniable force they were in concert.)

Must have album

13CK

I personally think the popular music that came out of Seattle in the early-mid nineties was quite boring, but The Gits, The Gits are what real rock is all about. Amazing band and they have feeling. You can tell they have fun doing what they do and love to play this music. It's really too bad they didn't get to keep going. This just a great album, check it out.

Seattle Rock at it's best!

Boobenschkaltrock

I discovered this group years after they were gone from the scene. Friends of mine in the current Seattle music age that were there and knew the Gits said this is a must have for the experience of the time. I say that the vocals and music are timeless and a must have for the Northwest Alternative Fan.

F#cking Amazing

If you never got to see this band, you missed out. However, a documentary about the band has just been released (The Gits Movie), find it & enjoy! The good news is the albums available here are pretty much everything they ever released. Do yourself a favor & download it all. They are timeless, category transcendent, punk-like rock that will make you a better person. This is one of the best bands to emerge from the Seattle music scene & they had a big hand in creating that scene.Turn your friends on to these guys & keep the Gits Alive!

They Say All Music Guide

The most immediately obvious aspect of the Gits’ debut album, Frenching the Bully, is Mia Zapata’s righteous, feminist-tinged punk rage. Her songs wind their way through tales of deception, insecurity, failed relationships, and hard drinking, while her hoarse, husky voice supports the combination of toughness and vulnerability projected in her lyrics. Even if Zapata’s meanings are occasionally a bit obscure, and even if a few songs seem to lack adequate melodicism, Frenching the Bully is an invigorating piece of punk rock. [The 2003 reissue on Broken Rekids is remixed by Jack Endino and adds "Spear and Magic Helmet" to tracklisting of the original album as well as eight songs recorded live in Portland taken from a June, 1993 show and the single version of "Twisting"] – Steve Huey
