Heaven Knows

A Grass Roots classic that has definitely withstood the test of time...enjoyed it just as much today as I did the first time I heard it over thirty-five years ago. The classics are truly timeless. The Grass Roots have never received the adulation they deserve. A heartfelt "Thank you!!" to that super group.

20th Century Master: R.I.P. Rob Grill (1943-2011)

The Grass Roots, get little respect historically, despite having 29 Billboard Chart Hot 100 Hits, 14 in the top 40. Their original LPs and hits were produced by Steve Barri for on ABC/Dunhill beginning in 1967 and the hits were oft composed by outside writers like Lambert & Potter or PF Sloan. Rob Grill, one of rock's most memorable voices, was the original bassist & vocalist and only consistent member. The initial run for the group ended with a final studio LP in 1975. Rob Grill released a solo album in 1979 called Uprooted and eventually resumed activity under the Grass Roots name in the early 1980's. Grill kept the name & a band touring for many years after the original 60's & early 70's lineups dissolved and a few recordings from those latter years of his career are on eMusic with a newer lineup that actually lasted way longer than the original group. He died unexpectedly in July 2011 after suffering a stroke in an Orlando FL

They Say All Music Guide

This seems like an unnecessary collection, considering that All Time Greatest Hits — released on the same label, just five years previously — has all 12 songs on this grandly titled “20th Century Masters” edition, and adds four tracks not on this collection. If it’s just the big hits you’re looking for, and as a matter of convenience it’s easier to acquire this title, it does have the main familiar hits, from “Where Were You When I Needed You” and “Let’s Live for Today” to “Temptation Eyes” and “Sooner or Later.” Those wishing for more obscure, worthy early cuts like “Mr. Jones (Ballad of a Thin Man),” “Tip of My Tongue,” and “Feelings” need to go to Rhino’s two-CD Anthology. – Richie Unterberger
