Well Symphony No.2 has always been my favourite of the 9 (a real gem) but No.1 I always thought was the let down...that was until I bought Frans Bruggens recording a few years back. He alone made it sound not just interesting but really thrilling and so does Thomas Fey (ditto with No.2)This group are a real discovery..just when you think youv've heard the Beethoven symphonies once too often they blow you away once again...now I must hear their recording of 4 & 6
An uncharitable view of these works is that they are Beethoven's 8th and 9th most popular symphonies, but even in just these 2 pieces you can hear the transition from the world of Haydn to the world of the Eroica.
