They Say All Music Guide

Trombonist Herbie Harper is best-known for his recordings in the 1950s but this 1989 set shows that decades of studio work had not dulled his style. Teamed in a quintet with Bill Perkins (who switches between tenor, baritone and flute), guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist John Leitham and drummer Larance Marable, Harper mixes together standards and lesser-known tunes including Russ Freeman’s “The Wind,” Jobim’s “Zingaro,” “Remember” and Bob Brookmyer’s “Dirty Man.” This is a modern cool jazz set that swings at a quiet volume; straightahead jazz fans will enjoy the results. – Scott Yanow
