These songs were better off lost; derivative b-sides at best. If this wasn't Westerberg, it would be an instant end-cap special.

If you like the Replacements, you won't like this. If you like PW's solo stuff, you'll be happy. It's on the better side of his lackluster post-Mats career.

Paul Westerberg and Julian Hatfield - how cool is that? More Replacements-style sloppy guitar rock'n'roll.

Just got done giving the album a first listen. Why haven't Westerberg and Hatfield collaborated before? They complement each other perfectly. It sounds like Julia went into Paul's collection of songs and picked out her favorites. She did a great job. A fantastic, surprising gem.

As if that were ever in doubt, Paul. :) While it doesn't hit the heights of Mono/Stereo, it's easily Paul's best album since then. And if you're a fan of the first three Westerberg solo albums, you'll feel right at home here.

Best Westerberg release in ages

4x8

According to an interview Westerberg did with Peter Wolf (yep, the J.Geils band Peter Wolf), these are a bunch of songs/demos Westerberg had laying around his basement studio. Inertia had set-in and it took Hatfield to pick out some of the gems and help whip them into shape. If true, the collaboration has made for the best Westerberg release in ages. If you liked the harder stuff on "All Shook Down" or "14 Songs" you'll dig this - lots of stone-sy rock-with-a-tender-side ("Whole Lotta Nothin'," "Born to Me"). My favorite record of the very young year!
