The Jazz Butcher's Masterpiece
While Pat calls this the sound of a band that was "coming to bits", to me this is the sound of a band unafraid to follow its muse...even if that muse was somewhat scattered. Bits of country, swing and jazz infuse the album with an exotic tinge and makes it timeless: other than being awash in reverb, there is nothing here that says "1986." Sadly, what makes this album great is what also pushed it outside of their core college radio audience. They would later find their way back, but never made an album this adventurous or lovely again. Yes, there's some goofy stuff here, but still plenty to love even if you refuse point-blank to understand their jokes.
