The Jazz Mandolin Project, The Deep Forbidden Lake
Label: DKE Records

Covering songs by Neil Young, Tom Waits, Django Reinhardt, Ornette Coleman and Radiohead on the same disc might seem like stylistic suicide, or at the very least a gimmicky reach — and yet, mandolinist Jamie Masefield's trio (supplemented by bass and piano) not only pulls it off, they make this diverse collection of songs feel of a singular piece. Maybe the best cut is a beautiful reading of Leonard Cohen's landmark "Hallelujah."

This is beautiful music. Great covers of some of these tunes, especially the Tom Waits songs. I hope that Emusic makes more albums by this band available.
