Arbors in the 1990s has become one of the top Dixieland labels around, generally focusing on all-star groups. This spirited set has an interesting cast of players: trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, trombonist Dan Barrett, clarinetist Chuck Hedges, Rick Fay on tenor and soprano, pianist Johnny Varro, bassist Bob Haggart, and drummer Gene Estes. Together they romp through ten Dixieland and swing standards along with a lengthy “Blues for an Unknown Gypsy.” Highlights include “Mandy, Make up Your Mind,” “Sensation,” and “Nobody’s Sweetheart.” Fans of these musicians and of trad jazz in particular are advised to get this fine CD. – Scott Yanow
