Mighty Good
In 1973, Stax's house band, the incomparable Booker T. & the MGs was without Steve Cropper and Booker T. Jones, himself. When the amazing Al Jackson (drums) and the wonderful Duck Dunn (bass) wanted to reform the MGs, they got session guitarist Bobby Manuel and songwriter/keyboardist Carson Whitsett. "Spare Change" stood out right away. Whitsett's piano is superb. Dunn and Jackson are perfect, and Manuel plays a tasteful solo. But the rest of the album was too jazzy/easy listening for my taste. The second time around, I told myself, this is not Booker T. & the MGs. So, I went in not wanting to hear them, especially Steve Cropper. With that mindset, the whole album just came alive. I realized this is different and unique to anything I ever heard before. Whitsett's considerable skills are on show, and Manuel proves his worth. He's versatile and ahead of his time. And with Jackson and Duck Dunn serving as the backbone to an album, you can't go wrong.
