Jangly & Dreamy

Definitely a must have for a genre-completist. I enjoy this album far more than Indie rock contemporaries across the pond like Mighty Lemon Drops, the LAs, or Boo Radleys. "Between Something and Nothing" is a flat-out classic, while "Vanity Fair" and "Just let Me Know" are quite outstanding. The only downsides are that there's nothing here *too* ambitious musically or challenging lyrically. That being said, these songs are effortlessly buoyant, bouncy and sublime.

A must have

This is yet another under rated Cd from the '80's. Every song is a winner! Get it.

Every track a winner

Let's face it - I'm a cheapskate. I love downloadable music because I don't have to buy 10 rotten tracks just to own the 1 good one on the album. With The Ocean Blue, I don't have this problem. I bought the tape back in 1989. I loved every track then and, 20 years later, I still love every track now. The music is quietly catchy with a subdued bounciness that I find irrestistable. And, if you know what's good for you, you will too.

Hershey, PA’s the Ocean Blue are practically masters of sweet, gentle, vaguely British pop, combining sparkling, jangly guitars with crisp, sweet vocals and thoroughly melodic songwriting. Their self-titled debut lays down the blueprint for this sound, which remained largely unchanged through releases like Cerulean (which sported slightly dreamier production and songwriting) and Beneath the Rhythm & Sound (the band’s most polished and pop-oriented effort), falling somewhere between the squeaky-clean pop of the Housemartins and the gorgeous melodic elements of the Cocteau Twins. While its songwriting occasionally falters, and it lacks the sonic cohesion of its two successors, The Ocean Blue delivers on what makes all of the band’s work so appealing: simple, beautiful hooks and melodies. – Nitsuh Abebe
