The O'Jays at the Peak of Perfection

TLJ1960

This is the best of the O'Jays catalog, and bittersweet because this would be the last album with Walter Williams in the line up (He would pass away in 1977 from cancer). From "Unity", to the title track, to "Livin' For The Weekend" & "I Love Music", this was the most enjoyable 43 minutes in my teenage life! they don't make good music like this anymore!

A Record Worth Lovin'

isaacmusicman

Man, my mom played this album so much that the vinyl started coming off. But that's what to expect when you love an album that much, and "Family Reunion" is a record to love. After this album came out, every family tried to start family reunions up. The unfortunate thing is that this album is The O'Jays last of the super-classic albums(not the last of the classic songs though). They moved toward a little disco with "I Love Music", but the social conscious of Gamble and Huff are still here. A album like this is an album worth lovin'

My reaction the first time I heard it, recently, was both shock that it hadn't become a big hit, and curiosity if Moore had ever recorded anything else good. Then I looked into her career a little more, and what I discovered was even more shocking: it… more »

They Say All Music Guide

In the 1970s, Philadelphia International Records could seemingly do no wrong where the O’Jays were concerned. The Cleveland trio recorded one gem after another under Gamble & Huff’s direction, and Family Reunion was no exception. Nothing on this CD has the angry bite of “Back Stabbers,” “Don’t Call Me Brother” or “Rich Get Richer,” and the mood is upbeat and optimistic on everything from the uplifting “Unity” to the ballad “Stairway to Heaven” (not to be confused with the Led Zeppelin song) to the escapist party anthem “Livin’ for the Weekend.” With the intoxicating “I Love Music,” the O’Jays stressed the soul side of disco and provided one of the most appealing hits of the disco era. From start to finish, Family Reunion was a valuable addition to a catalog that already had its share of treasures. – Alex Henderson
