Like listening to angels singing

Memorymama

I heard the Pennywhistlers in the 1960s. I didn't realize they were American, because I heard them do Eastern European acapella choral music. I've been looking for a recording of their music for years! I even wrote to Nonesuch (their original label) a couple of years ago with no success. What a pleasure to find them on emusic. As I listen to them now, I realize how much they raised the bar for me when it came to singing with other people. They combine the best of so-called 'easy listening' (not in the pejorative sense) and passion.

Beautiful female vocals

Spellucci

This album is filled with wonderful women's voices, mostly a capella, singing a wide range of music including many haunting Eastern European songs. The 30-second sample of the Bulgarian folk song Tudora does not do it justice; at least download that one to get a feel for the beauty of this all-woman folk group. According to Folkways, this album was recorded in 1963. And according to the Freedman catalog, the group included Francine Brown, Joyce Gluck, Shiela Greenberg, Alicde Kogan, Boldsi London, Ethel Raim, and Dina Suller. Enjoy!
