The Polyphonic Spree, The Beginning Stages Of
2004 | Label: Good Records / The Orchard

If Flaming Lips 'Wayne Coyne joined forces with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the result would probably bear a close resemblance to the cheerily, cheesily uplifting sound of the Polyphonic Spree. Led by former Tripping Daisy frontman Tim DeLaughter, the 20-to-30-member Dallas group (which performs in concert wearing flowing white robes, enhancing their already cultish vibe) play pop-psychedelic symphonies that feature gorgeously layered choral vocals. Recorded in only three days, The Beginning Stages Of. . . nonetheless sounds as if it were delivered from on high — profoundly sunny and relentlessly anthemic, the tracks are thickly layered with Theremin, flute, timpani, horns, you name it. Choice cuts include the strident "Soldier Girl" and the soaring "It's the Sun" (whose seemingly banal lyrics — "Hey now, it's the sun/ And it makes me shine" — are miraculously transformed into an inspirational mantra). Prepare yourself for a beautiful brainwashing.

Love it

A friend of mine played this album for me years ago in college and I fell in love with it. Track 10 is getting a bad rap here, but it's actually one of my favourite parts of the album. I like to listen to it while I'm relaxing and zoning out.

Great--but don't buy #10

This album is awesome; the band is full of awesome musicians and their instrumentation is so unique that, combined with their near-cheesy optimism, this is a great grab. However, DO NOT buy #10: the long day. It is 30 minutes of a synthesizer droning, not playing a melody or leading anywhere; it's just a cheap effort to bump up the album time.

I really tried to like the spree, but I stopped listening to them. Too much repetition, and their songs became tedious. Like too much ice cream. I ended up with a tummy ache.

Great Album From a Great Band

Polyphonic Spree. That basically sums it up. Poly --> mulitple. phonic --> sounds. Spree --> A Lively noisey time. That's is. It is as Barragas (above) said, is is very, "yeah yeah happy happy, yeah! The suuuuuun!" but not in a sappy or uncreative way. Although I like the last track, most people will hate it like a knife in teh back.

i first stumbled upon the Polyphonic spree on a vw ad that used "light and day" as a soundtrack. i grew curious and got the album. WOW.WOW.WOW! I became a fan right away! Even though the music is kind of too "happy happy joy joy" (as i like to call it) for my general taste, the album has such a raw energy and is so naive, upfront and honest that it makes you want to sing along screaming, contributing to the general audio mix. Mix which at its best moments walks the thin line between a mix and total instrumental anarchy... and that my friends, is where the genius of "The Beginning Stages Of" resides.

Track 10 - oops, somebody's asleep/drunk at the synthesizer....a good track to fall asleep to, if you like electronic/techno music....

This one brings back really great memories of seeing The Polyphonic Spree at Shelter in Detroit -- almost too much band for the stage and louder than all cripies. The album is much different from their live show, however; really, full of moody tension when it comes down to it. Get this one! Now let's see Tripping Daisy at Emusic!!

They Say All Music Guide

Talk about your teenage symphonies to God. The Polyphonic Spree create the most euphoric, uplifting pop music imaginable. A self-described symphonic pop band crediting an astounding 29 members, their guilelessly spiritual lyrics and flowing white robes suggest they’re a cult act in both the literal and figurative sense of the term, but the sheer joy of their music is undeniably persuasive, evoking the otherworldly brilliance of everything from Pet Sounds to The Soft Bulletin. Leader Tim DeLaughter, late of the oft-annoying Tripping Daisy, has harnessed something truly pure and enriching this time around — imagine Up With People entering the studio with Dave Fridmann in the producer’s chair, and you’re getting close. This is life-affirming music of the highest caliber. – Jason Ankeny
