Astounding

Their 13th Anniversary show at First Avenue in Minneapolis was a highwater mark in my musical life as well. Simply astounding. I pretty much wore out my cassette copy of it. Their version of "Man's, Man's World" tops JB's.

Better than a "Best of"

Unenclosed

I managed to see shows at both the beginning and end of this tour and both were among the best live shows I've ever attended. I have never heard an Elvis Presley song the same since hearing their version of "Jailhouse Rock". Although I haven't heard these versions yet, "Semolina," "Walter Westinghouse," "Smelly Tongues" -- it doesn't get much better than this.

Powerful

The Resident striped down to the core a couple of samplers and Snakefinger RIP. What more can you ask for. Classic songs done with so much emotion, no way to explain it but definitely heavy on the dramatics and mood. Wish Ralph would re-release the "Live In USA" version of this performance, equally as exciting.

Peak Residents

I'm not rating this before I listen but I saw this performance live in Chicago. It was a high water mark in my musical life. It covers all the best pre-Cube-E material (which for some fans means it's the "real" residents sound bolstered by the insane genius of Snakefinger.) I don't know if this is the same as the vinyl release "live in Japan" that came out years ago. Either way, this is a must have as a document of the most creative musical troupe in Bizzaro World. Any version of Easter Woman is worth having, so if you don't know The Residents, start with that. You'll love it or hate it.

eMusic Yearbook: 2002

Maybe it's a coincidence that three fabulous and endlessly eclectic DJ mix-CDs - John Peel's FabricLive 07, 2 Many DJ's As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2, and DJ /rupture's Minesweeper Suite - all came out in 2002. But it sure didn't feel that way at the time. Of course, eclectic DJ mixes were nothing new; they'd been a standard from at least 1995, when Coldcut released 70 Minutes of Madness. But 2002 was a… more »
